This project aimed to design a poster for a travel company to promote their new travel package, and we were only allowed to use typography as the design element. The first country that came to my mind was Mexico. Mexico is a unique country; I’ve been there once, and I love their culture and food.

I came up with a few different concepts, including taco, the Day of the Dead, Maya, and the Sombrero hat. Finally, I chose the Day of the Dead as the theme of this poster, which is the most exciting holiday in Mexico. On this day, people celebrate and welcome back the soul of their deceased families for a brief reunion, and this is a joyful celebration rather than mourning. I want to show the warm and friendly Mexico through this colourful design. I used a lot of bright colours to reflect the passion of Mexicans. The colourful skull with the typical Mexican hat is the emphasis of this design. The skull has a smiling face with “Hola” on its teeth. People use marigolds, the orange flower, to attract souls on the Day of the Dead, so I chose orange as the key colour of this poster. Jalapeno, cactus, and music notes formed with different typefaces were used to show the holiday spirit.

I used Adobe Illustrator to complete this project, and I’ve learned that every typeface can express a lot of emotion. It’s essential to choose the appropriate typeface to convey the right mood.
